Once a major waterway for the ancient Maya, the New River meanders through Orange Walk District linking its towns and villages, primal jungles, sugar cane farms, and some of Belize's most awe inspiring ruins. The Lamanai Mayan site serves as reminder of the flourishing culture that dominated this area more than 3000 years ago, and visitors can still reach Lamanai by boat, as the Mayan did for millennia. With jungles, rainforests, coastal lagoons, and rivers, the region is home to an amazing array of animal and plant life that includes the jaguar, manatee, and more than 400 species of birds that inhabit the riverbanks. Our preferred accommodations in Lamanai is the Lamanai Outpost Lodge which provides an experience that combines adventure, education, and leisure in a unique and magical blend.
