Belize City is the country's only urban genuine area. It is Belize's commercial hub, transportation, cultural center, main seaport and most populated region. It is the gateway to all the other tourist areas in the country. Belize City itself does not have many tourist attractions; overnight stays are mandatory only when you book an optional tour like Lamanai, the Panti Trail, etc. There are two airports. Domestic flights leave from both of them although flights from the domestic airport are less expensive.

In the morning, at approximately 8:00am, you will depart for a
full day journey to explore the flora, fauna, and wildlife (including monkeys,
crocodiles, iguanas, and birds) of Belize, on the way to the Altun-Ha ruins,
(which means Water of the Rock) a Mayan ceremonial center settled more than
2,000 years ago. It was here that the largest carved jade object in the whole
maya area, a Jade Head, was found. This Jade Head represents the Sun God, Kinich
Ahau, and can be seen in the corner of every Belizean banknote. Altun Ha was
a major ceremonial center during the Classic Period (250-900A.D) and functioned
as a vital trading center linking the Caribbean shores with other Maya centers.
Altun Ha is located 31 miles north of Belize City. The ruins, which cover 25
square miles, include five temples and a burial site containing offerings of
carved jade. From there, continue to the Community Baboon Sanctuary on the banks
of the Belize River, which consists of some eighteen square miles of basically
subsistence farms, the sanctuary exhibits the spirit of coexistence that Belizeans
have with nature. Through a grassroots effort, the villagers and landowners
have committed to preserving the habitat necessary to insure a healthy population
of Black Howler Monkeys. You will return to the hotel at approximately 5:00pm.
