Then continue to Ouro Preto, a masterpiece of Baroque colonial architecture in Brazil. UNESCO has declared Ouro Preto a cultural monument for all mankind. Its mid-18th century appearance has been faithfully maintained to this day - narrow stone-paved streets winding through the town's hills lined with centuries-old houses and baroque churches.
Created in 1711, Ouro Preto was the first capital of the state of Minas Gerais and nowadays is the city that brings together one of the most homogeneous and complete collections of baroque art in the world. Its architecture faithfully reflects Brazil’s colonial past. Its churches include São Francisco de Assis, whose architectural and artistic splendor is the work of Aleijadinho, and the Mother Church of our Lady of the Pillar, one of the richest in the country with 434 kilos of pure gold and 400 kilos of silver in its ornaments. Also in Ouro Preto is the Opera House, dating from 1770, the oldest theatre in use in the Americas, and Casa dos Contos, architecturally remarkable and serving as a prison for Tiradentes and the other members of the Inconfidência Mineira.

Early this morning, depart for Mariana, the first capital and bishopric of Minas Gerais, founded in 1711. This quiet provincial city of 40,000 inhabitants was named in honor of Maria Anna of Austria (wife of Dom Joao V). Its principal attractions are the Casa Capitular, built in 1771, with its richly decorated façade and copestone windows. It now serves as the Archdiocese Museum and contains 18th- and 19th-century religious art. Works by Aleijadinho and Athayde are also on display here; the architectural identical twins of Sao Francisco de Assis and Nossa Senhora do Carmo, the former Franciscan and the latter Carmelite, stand opposite each other. The Franciscan church was begun in 1763; work on the Carmelite structure was initiated 20 years later. The tympanum above the portal depicting Sao Francisco is by Aleijadinho. And the Basilica da Se, which was built between 1711 and 1760, the magnificence of this structure - whose façade is by Aleijadinho - testifies to the city`s former importance.
Four kilometers from Mariana in the direction of Ouro Preto lies Mina da Passagem, a gold mine that was abandoned in 1985. Visitors are guided around the natural lakes and tunnels that comprise the 15-squarekilometer area of the mine, which is 120 meters underground.

Today, you will depart for Sabara, situated 720 meters above sea level and 25 kilometers east of Belo Horizonte, it is a perfect portal through which to enter the world of the Minas Gerais Baroque
You will visit Nossa Senhora da Conceigao (1701), one of the oldest Baroque churches in the entire Minas area. The three-naved church features a coffered ceiling, and contains several of the Asian motifs that constitute an important contribution of Portugal`s former colonies in the Far East to the multi faceted Brazilian Baroque. And Nossa Senhora do O, the decoration of the interior of this chapel (whose exterior is relatively unornamented) is typical of the early Baroque in Minas: impressive wood carvings on the choir, and exotic red, blue and gold Chinese motifs on the front wall. Aleijadinho, generally acknowledged to be the master of the Minas Baroque, was active in Sabara in the 1860`s, and contributed to the facade of the Carmelite church Nossa Senhora do Carmo. And finally the Museo do Ouro (Gold Museum), which originally was the government office that regulated every aspect of gold mining. The museum has a scale model of a mine on display, complete with scales, panniers and gold jewelry, as well as a minting press dating from 1670.
