Canoa Quebrada (Broken Canoe) sits at the eastern edge, 102 miles from Fortaleza. It is a very special and popular destination for Brazilians. It was just a sleepy fishing village until American hippies discovered it in the 70`s. In the 80`s, well-heeled Europeans started moving in and the hippies moved on. Today, it`s open to the whole world.
The heart of Canoa Quebrada is a relatively small beach, backed by a marvelously old and well kept fishing village. The working village has to be maintained, by law, as it always was, for historical purposes. The tiny little fishing "town" is also preserved. The main drag, and the only street through town is called Broadway. Just west you`ll find ultra modern hotels, and a growing local economy of tourist enterprises in Porto Canoa and Majorlandia. The breathtaking beauty of its sand dunes, rugged cliffs, and lagoons will leave you stunned along with the countless colorful fish and sea life, this tour will be unforgettable.

Spend a half-day visiting Fortaleza. Although it has the 5th largest population among all Brazilian capitals, it is still a town that has a quiet, peaceful and hospitable atmosphere.
You will visit the stream-lined modern downtown, teeming with top-rate hotels, international class restaurants and excellent entertainment and show houses, as well as the old town which is a guardian of the best of its past and its traditions. Of special interest are the old lighthouse in Mucuripe, which was built by slaves in the baroque style, between 1840 and 1845. Constructed of masonry, timber and iron, it was deactivated in 1957 and restored in 1981 and 1982 to shelter the Jangadeiro Museum. It currently holds the Lighthouse Museum. From the top, there is a dazzling view of the sea and sand dunes. The National Historical Heritage has listed the building. You will also visit Our Lady of Assumption Fortress, Initially called "Schoonenborch", the fort was built by the Dutchman Matias Beck in 1549. Under the possession of the Portuguese in 1654, the fort came to be named "Our Lady of Assumption Fort". It underwent reforms projected by the architect Silva Paulet from São Paulo, being rebuilt in masonry in 1817, the year of the Ecuador Confederation. Currently it is the headquarters of the Tenth Military Region. The city of Fortaleza is named after this fort.
You will also see the Historical and Anthropological Museum, the Central Square, the former Public Prison building now turned into an up-to-date tourist center, and much more, linking the past to the present.

Depart for a full day to the beaches of Cumbuno, just 15 miles west of Fortaleza. Cumbucu features a combination of dunes and blue to jade water, which are hard to beat. As in many places along the coast, dunes kiss the beach. The whole place is a paradise for photographers, both professional and amateur. At one point, you will see a lonely line of coconut trees marching off into the dunes until they disappear into the shimmering distance. You will visit Banana Lake (with a mountain backdrop), where the upscale Fortalezans have their homes, as well as Lagoa do Parnamirim to see or participate in the sport of "esquibunda" or dune surfing.

Spend a full day in Lagoinha, located 124 km from Fortaleza, towards the Serra do Mar range. Lagoinha gets its name from the calm waters that rule this beach. Nine miles of beaches created from a rich and colorful desert island with soft, rolling dunes that lead downhill to coconut palms and long stretches of beautiful wave strewn sandy beaches with nary a crowd in sight. Seen from the heights of the dunes, it is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, particularly if you should spy a lonely white sail of a passing jangada set against the sun strewn deep blue in a white capped ocean. The contrast of the green of the coconut palms clinging to the sides of the dunes against the frothed blue of the sea is breathtaking.

Early in the morning, depart for Morro Branco, located 60 miles from Fortaleza, famous for its falesias (eroded cliffs), which make this coastline so exotic. The cliffs range from white to pink and from red to beige. Chances are that you will not leave without one or more bottles of the home grown, naturally colored sand, crafted by local artists. They feature little sand murals of the sea, beach houses, trees, sky, and of course, the beach. Behind Morro Branco, march the eternal dunes. You may wish to climb the largest hill, the Mirante do Morro Branco and observe the ocean, the goings and comings of the local fishermen, and the far horizons. It is a beautiful, panoramic view of the ocean off Ceará.
Just a little further down the beach you`ll find the lovely tourist resort of Praia das Fontes. Fontes is the Portuguese word for springs, and there are many here, which provide cool, fresh water, quite suitable for drinking. This area is also known for its colorful cliffs and paths through the eroded hillsides to the beaches of white sand kissed by blue waters. Like in so many of the other beaches of Ceara, the old fishing village of Praia das Fontes co-exists with the modern tourist facilities. Progress has been kind to Praia das Fontes and Morro Branco. The beaches are untouched, as are the dunes behind the towns.
