5 - Antigua - Tikal Pyramids

We loved Guatemala. The Westin & Marriott in Guatemala City were both excellent. The Villa Colonial in Antigua had nice grounds, restaurant, & staff, but the room was only ok. The walls were too thin & we could hear the neighbors talking & having a party & the bathroom smelled like mildew & there were 2 double beds instead of 1 king or 1 queen bed. The Camino Real Tikal was good. The resort grounds, staff & restaurant were nice, but again the room was just ok. The room decor was dated & the 2 double beds made sleeping with our 1 year old uncomfortable. Our transfers were excellent. Victor our guide in Chichicastenango was really knowledgeable & friendly. The transfer from the airport in Guatemala City to Antigua was also good. The tour to Tikal was great except that our itinerary said we`d get picked up at 7:45am & it was supposed to say 8:30am, so we waited around for a while when we could`ve slept in a little. We were disappointed that no one told us we weren`t going to stop in Panajachel until we were already on the tour to Chichicastenango. We really wanted to see Lake Atitlan and apparently the road that goes there was under construction, so we couldn`t stop. Luckily, the people, food, & sights in Guatemala made up for the not so perfect hotel rooms & small invconveniences. The guidebooks all said the food isn`t anything special, but we liked it. The people were so nice to us, it even seemed they were especially nice because of our 1 year old son. We definitely will come back & see more ruins near Tikal, see more of Guatemala City (which we really didn`t have time to see at all), & see the Carribean coast, & the area around Lake Atitlan. We would recommend Latin Destinations to our friends.
