One of the highest peaks in the entire country is the Baru Volcano, rising to an elevation of 11,490 feet or 3,474 meters above sea level and the heart of the National Park that bears the same name. The breathtaking views
at sunrise of both Pacific and Atlantic oceans is a most wonderful and thrilling experience.
Volcan Baru National Park has a highly valuable geological and ecological scenic landscape that protects a biological diversity with some unique species of this area. In this park you will find tropical rainforest landscapes with highlands species and the remains of the last blast of the Baru Volcano that happened millions of years ago.
The mix between the forest and the volcanic remains is in tune with the agricultural activities that are normal for this altitude with nice temperatures between 10º and 20º C. and typical natural foods, and all of this has contributed to make it one of the most visited parks in Panama.
You will depart from your hotel in Boquete at 6:00 AM, for the interesting drive up to the volcano. On a clear day, hopefully, you will encounter an unforgettable sunrise, you'll feel like you're on top of the world!
Once at the park, you will enjoy multiple ways of getting in touch with nature. Some trails, like La Nevera and Los Quetzales (from Cerro Punta to Boquete), can provide the enchantment of the tropical rainforest and its habitat. The ascent to the top of the volcano, 3,475 meters (11,000 ft) above sea level, could be made in a strong 4x4 vehicle and could take up to 45 minutes or on
foot around 4 hours and will bring back memories of the origins of the American Continent. During this climb, you will have the opportunity to see much evidence of the last eruption. Once you reach the top and with good weather conditions you could see both oceans (Pacific and Caribbean). The Baru National park is home to abundant wildlife, including pumas, tapirs and beautiful birds. You will have the opportunity to observe many birds such as the the Silvery-fronted Tapaculo, Silvery-throated Jay, Black-faced Solitaire and the Barred Becard. And hopefully, you will have the opportunity to see the elusive resplendent quetzal in its cool habitat of orchids and bromelaids.
For your convenience, binoculars are provided at no extra cost.

Panama's highest peak, the Barú volcano, juts into the sky at the height of 3,475 meters (11,340 ft) in the province of Chiriqui. From this breathtakingly beautiful peak the rivers of Chiriqui gracefully descend to majestically carve their way through some of the most pristine and beautiful cloud forests in the country. The hilly landscape is lush with dense cloud forest, interspersed with orange groves and coffee and banana plantations. Where exposed on escarpments,
roads or footpaths, high clay content gives the soil a bright red tinge. The river carves its lonely course through dense cloud forest and canyon gorges. Its banks range from vertical rock faces, steep banks of red clay and boulder piles to small isolated beaches. At intervals you will see cormorants, hawks and kingfishers. An iguana surveys the river calmly from a rock. A couple of otters show you the elegant way to negotiate the river.
The Chiriqui Viejo River meanders along the Panamanian-Costa Rican border and is not as easy to access as the Rio Chiriqui but you will be treated to a spectacular drive that certainly makes up for car time. While driving higher and higher up to the put in, you will get to take in beautiful scenes of virgin and untouched rain forest corridors and breath-taking views of the Volcan Barú and its surrounding hills. At one point your vehicle is so high that below you on one side of the road, Costa Rica's rows of teak plantations can be made out while directly on the other side, dense and wild rain forest blankets much of the Panamanian countryside. Certainly a beautiful drive to take whether you are rafting or not!.You have the option to choose between:
Palon Section - Class IV*.
The Palon Section(literally "big stick") of Chiriqui Viejo river is a class IV where non stop excitement, pristine tropical forest, and even a picturesque 30 foot waterfall are a combined treat for any rafter. Considerably narrower than its counterpart and dropping at a faster speed, the Viejo requires quick, tight maneuvering to get through the many rock gardens and enormous boulders and delivers continuous white water that contribute to its class IV ranking. Trips on the Palon Section take approximately 3 ½ - 4 hours to complete.
*Rafters on the Palon Section will have to hike about 20 minutes down to reach the river while the guides find ingenious ways to get the 100+lb rafts down to the put in. This is a down hill hike and therefore not a demanding on the average person.
Sabo Section - Class III. This section of the Viejo is a fun ride where plenty of high and deep wave trains provide continuous excitement. Ranked as a class III with several rapids, the Sabo section is also a great place for birding. Kingfishers, Cormorants, and Egrets are common sights down the Sabo section of the Viejo.
IMPORTANT NOTE:By law you must carry with you your valid passport at all times (Driver's ID is not acceptable). This is specially important in all the river outing conducted at the Chiriqui Viejo River, since the customers will be asked to show the passport
by immigration officials at a check point.

first aid kits are provided on each trip as well as other relevant river safety gear. They run only paddle boats on the rivers and expect everyone to contribute since the rafting trips are called "interactive".
