San Blas
The San Blas Archipelago is a series of 378 islands also known as the "Kuna Yala? that dot the northeast Caribbean coast of Panama near its border with Colombia. Just 49 of the islands are inhabited, primarily by the fiercely independent Kuna Indians, who have maintained their own language, customs, culture, and economy for millennia, with distinctive dress, legends, music and dance. Their economy is supported by coconut sales, fishing, arts and crafts, and modest tourism that protects their pristine environment and enduring culture.
The area boasts some of the oldest in the world reef systems in the world with fabulous snorkeling and swimming, particularly from April to June, but diving is not permitted in an effort to the fragile underwater eco system. Only a 20-minutes from Panama City by plane, a visit to San Blas is a trip back in time where visitors are rewarded with simple pleasures far from the stress and frenzy of our modern lives. There is much to be learned from the Kuna, who have near autonomy over these idyllic islands, and are renowned for their rainbow colored fabrics, emblazoned with fish, birds, jungle animals and geometric design made by the local women as the men fish from canoes as they did before the arrival of Columbus.
Accommodations in San Blas feature rustic comfort that is in harmony with the alluring environment, and fresh fare direct from the depths of the emerald sea. Picturesque islands with names like Achutupu, Kagantupu, Yandup and Coco Blanco, some no bigger than a soccer field, and many completely uninhabited, dot the azure seascape here and make San Blas a one of a kind vacation option that can also be linked to other phenomenol Panamanian destinations.
