Located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, the port-city of Paraty (or Parati) is a well-preserved Portuguese colonial and Brazilian imperial town. Strategically located, Paraty experienced a booming era fueled by gold trade and coffee exports, which ended when the mines were depleted and alternate coffee routes were found. Its revival began in the 1970's, when tourists discovered this hidden colonial gem due to a newly built paved road from Rio to Sao Paulo.

Enjoy a walking tour of Paraty. The village was founded in the mid sixteen hundred and was a staging post for 18th century trade in Brazilian gold, passing from
Minas Gerais to Portugal. Paraty remained hidden away off the beaten track, quietly stagnating but intact. Today, UNESCO considers Paraty to represent one of the world's most important examples of colonial architecture, and the entire city
has been elevated to the status of a national monument and has been designated a 'World Heritage Site'.
The town center was one of Brazil`s first planned urban projects, and houses built around courtyards, adorned with brightly coloured flowers and alive with hummingbirds, border its narrow cobbled streets. Cars are not allowed in the streets and deliveries to stores are made by donkey-drawn carts The cobblestones of the streets are arranged in channels to drain off water and allow the sea to enter and wash the streets at high tides.
You will stroll the narrow cobblestone streets, sensing the 17th century spirit and visit the main churches.
