Although Recife is the fourth-largest city in Brazil, it is less modern and cosmopolitan than its more famous counterparts. It is a major port city, and much of its energy and culture has its source in the constant influx and outflow of trade. High rises, colonial churches, and markets quilt the city with a mix of old and new. It is often called the Venice of Brazil for its many canals, bridges, and tiny one-way streets.

Recife was built as a port city along tropical, white-sand beaches lined with palm trees by the dutch in the 17th century. It is a fast-growing urban area that has been called the "Venice of Brazil" because it is dissected by numerous waterways and connected by many bridges. The city got its name from the coral reefs that line the coast. On this tour you will visit the most important and cultural highlights. Among then, you will visit Rua do Bom Jesus. The street and this whole island are the oldest part of Recife. The hand of the original makers is subtly evident on Rua da Bom Jesus. The parallel rows of thin four-story houses may have the coloring and bric-a-brac of Portugal, but the height, width, and form say Amsterdam. And the Capela Dorada (Golden Chapel), which is aptly named. The altar is a two-story arch of jacaranda and cedar, all gilt with gold. Christ hangs on a golden cross with gold and silver rays shining out behind His head. The walls are hung with oil paintings, each frame ornately carved and covered in a layer of real gold. The chapel is part of a Franciscan complex that includes a small sacred art museum with a few nice pieces of gold and silver work.
