Why

TRELEW/ PUERTO MADRYN (Central Patagonia)

South of Puerto Madryn and a 2 hour flight from Buenos Aires, Trelew offers the Paleontology Museum exhibiting fossilized fauna and flora. The Paleontology Park, 25 km from Trelew, offers a one kilometer guided walk to observe clues of the last 40 million years. Puerto Madryn, colonized by the Welsh, offers a mix of colonial and sub-aquatic marvels. A Welsh castle built in the late 1800’s is the center of the colonial and Welsh cultural attractions. With 70 meters of visibility, and several submarine parks, it is ideal for underwater exploration, filming and photography.

Sea Lions at Punta Loma Fauna Reserve, as well as several bird species, and spectacular views also mark this area. Isla de los Pajaros Natural Reserve is one of the first three natural reserves in the continent. Guided whale-watching tours operate daily in Puerto Piramide. With sensitive guides whales can be observed during their mating and breeding seasons. At Punta Valdes and Punta Delgada there are sea-lions and sea elephants reserves. At Punta Tombo the social life of the Magellanic penguin can be admired.

Peninsula de Valdez Wildlife Reserve:

Orcas:
Usually appear In the province of Chubut, mainly between the months of February and April and October to November. North End, Creek Valdés and San Jose Gulf, in the Peninsula are the places where orcas show frequently.

 


The marine wolf
: (Otaria flevescens) scattered in the Atlantic and Pacific coasts from the south of Brazil to Peru and commonly is seen throughout the year.

 


Marine Elephants: Peninsula Valdés, the only continental post station of this species, offers the opportunity to observe marine elephants (leonina Mirounga) without having to travel to remote islands. The males of three tons and five meters in length have harems of up to 10 females. They reproduce between August and November and change skins in the summer, specially the young ones and the females.

 

The austral frank whale: (Eubalaena australis of the Greek EU: " true ", of the Latin AUSTRALIS: " South ") is one of the 11 species of great whales that exist in the world at the present time. They are Mammalian and totally adapted to an aquatic life. Related to the dolphins, instead of teeth the whales have beards They feed by filtering the prey on the water. The males can measure up to 12 meters in length and weigh 30,000 kilos. The females however, are greater; they can measure up to 13.5 meters and weigh 35,000 kilos. The greatest being registered is a female of 16 meters.
