Petrópolis is a large hill-town that was once the summer home of the Emperor Pedro II and Brazil's XIX century presidents. It is located at 68 Km (1h 15 min) from Rio de Janeiro City, at 850 meters above sea level. There abound a wide variety of inns -some luxurious- and many restaurants, several featuring international-standard dishes (particularly in the Vale dos Gourmets, Itapaiva). Highlights include the fascinating Imperial Palace, the São Pedro de Alcântara Cathedral with the tombs of Emperor Pedro II, Empress Maria Cristina, Princess Isabel, other family members, the home of Santos Dumont, the orchidaria and the Crystal Palace. Outings include horse-drawn carriage rides and good golf. |
