| Located in cane
fields, this archaeological site is, two thousand years later, still
an active place of worship.

Huge stones
brought sown by the rivers of the south coast served as the raw
material for the carving of gigantic sculptures, which have been
found in this region. Among them, Stela 1 is the best known of El
Baul and appears to be the oldest, going back to the year 50 A.D.
placing this archaeological site in the late pre classic along with
nearby Abaj Takalik. Stela 1 shows a Maya warrior with an elaborate
headdress held by a chinstrap, an early Maya practice.
