TUCUME
: Over nine centuries ago, people of the Lambayeque culture on Peru's north coast started building a magnificent city. It survived and even grew under successive conquests by neighboring groups, only to fall into ruin within a few years of the Spanish conquest. The enormous site of over 50 acres included 26 major pyramids, making it the largest group of pyramids in South America. But with its collapse Tucume was gradually forgotten, the enormous pyramids with their eroded slopes often mistaken for natural mountains rather than manmade structures. Thor Heyerdahl first visited the site in 1988 and began excavations there with an international team, including Dan Sandweiss of Maine University. |
