Only 20 minutes from Panama City, the Soberania National Park encompasses more 55,000 acres of tropical forest on the banks of the Panama Canal. The preserve was established in 1980 and provides a rich habitat for more than 1300 plants, 525 species of birds including the Black Hawk-eagle, yellow-eared toucanets, crimson-bellied woodpeckers, and sirystes; 105 species of mammals including white-faced capuchin monkeys, tamarins, two and three-toed sloths, agoutis, and a number of endangered. The park is a haven for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts, and 1985 held the world record for avian species identified in a 24 hour period. On a historic note, the Camino de Cruces which runs through the park was used by the Spanish conquistadors to transport gold and other cargo from Peru to Spain, so even long before the Canal was built this area was an important thoroughfare for international commerce. The proximity of Soberania Park to civilization that is simply astounding, considering the preponderance of wildlife thrives here. A walk on one of the Park?s well marked trails can offer views of sloths, and kinkajous in the morning, with plenty of time for lunch in a trendy Panama City restaurant for lunch.
