BALTRA
Most visitors to the Galápagos arrive by air to the Isle of Baltra. Baltra is a fairly small island (27 sq km) off the north coast of Santa Cruz. This is the only island that is not part of the Galápagos National Park. The Ecuadorian Army, who's also in charge of the airport, controls the administration of the island. There are no visitor sites or accommodations here, but both public and private transportation from the airport to Puerto Ayora (the biggest town) are available. People on a prearranged tour are often met at the airport and taken to their boats a few minutes' drive away - a host of pelicans and noddies will greet you as you arrive at the harbor and you can begin your wildlife watching within minutes of leaving the airport. |
