FLOREANA
(CHARLES)
From the early times of exploration of the Galapagos, Floreana was the most visited island for whale and turtle hunters. The reason for this is the presence of a permanent fresh water spring and easy anchoring places. Punta Cormorant trail is very easy, surrounds a salt-water lagoon where there are large quantities of flamingos and other aquatic birds. The trail ends in a very beautiful white sandy beach, that is and important nesting place for marine turtles. Nearby we find Post Office Bay, an obligatory stop to whoever wants to send letter or messages with the peculiar mail system of the Floreana Island, which still uses the same system than the letters sent by whalers 200 years ago. Diving One of the better places in the islands for snorkeling is The Devil’s Crown. There, with some luck you may see hammerhead sharks. You can scuba dive there too, but you there are more options, like Champion or Enderby islets. Other places to visit: Asilo de la Paz. |
