SANTIAGO ISLAND

SANTIAGO (JAMES)

Although Santiago is a very interesting and diverse island, unfortunately, it is negatively affected by the introduction of foreign animals. The worst case, goats, with a population of nearly 100.000, continue to destroy vegetation everywhere.

There are four places to visit. The most important and especially interesting during low tide is Puerto Egas, where it is fascinating to search for invertebrates in the tidal pools. At the end of the trail, you will arrive at the grottos or pools, where the fur sea lions live. The grottos are beautiful natural formations where visitors can have a close up view of them. Take good pictures of the fur sea lions, but go early because when the sun is at its peak, the Fur sea lions look for shade, disappearing in caverns and caves.

Santiago Island is also a good place to observe herons and other birds. Galápagos hawks, iguanas and different species of coast birds are abundant on this island.

Snorkeling is excellent from the black beach, and you can also scuba dive along the coast or near Albany Islet.

Other places to visit are: Mina de Sal, Playa Espumilla and Sullivan Bay.
